SALEM, Ore.– Coming off her PR-performance Saturday at the Warner Pacific XC Classic, West Salem freshman Olivia Moye continued her dominant freshman season with a fourth-place finish at the inaugural Creekside Cross Classic Wednesday at Creekside Golf Course.
Admittingly, as Moye collected her fourth 5K Top 10 finish not to mention a 11th-place finish at Saturday’s race and a 17th-place finish at the Nike Portland XC race on September 28, the Titan freshman was open about starting the race too strong and fast than she would have liked as she sat first at roughly the 900 meter mark of the race.
“Yeah I started a little too fast so that’s a lesson to learn from as I continue on through the season. It’s going to be pretty important; I just have to be able to reflect upon that,” said Moye. “My goal was Top 5 and I got fourth so I was right where I wanted to be.”
The 2018 Salem-Keizer School District All-City Champion slowed it down a bit after her fast start, pacing herself with Bend’s Olive Nye, Sisters Ella Thorsett and Philomath’s Hannah Hernandez down the stretch.
“To improve moving forward, just pace myself. That was kind of my mistake in this race. I started off a little too fast and not leaving enough for the rest of the race,” said Moye. “Just making sure starting off on a pace that I know I can keep for the rest, but still being able to stay in the top.”
Teammate Ella Repp finished ninth in the race at 19:22. Nyana DeBerry was 33rd with a time of 21:31.40, Veronica Cooke was 35th at 21:34 and Jocelyn Conn was 40th at 21:40.70 as the Titans finished fourth as a team with 117 runners in the field.
