SALEM, Ore.– This week’s honoree’s for the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club includes West Salem’s Andres Labate, McNary’s Caitlyn Yates, South Salem’s David Garcia Campos and McKay’s Kaydence Nguyen
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is a returning honoree – Andres Labate from West Salem boys soccer. Andres, a senior, plays midfielder for the 3-0 Titans. West has started off as a “scoring machine”, winning over Sherwood 4-3 and McMinnville 3-2 before shutting out Sheldon 5-0. In the first two wins Andres was involved in all seven goals, scoring five himself and assisting on two others. Andres intends to attend and play soccer in college.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McNary girls soccer – Caitlyn Yates. Caitlyn, a senior, plays mid-fielder and forward for the 1-1-1 Celts. In the blowout over Benson Caitlyn scored a hat trick. Against South Medford it was the tale of two halves, the Panthers scored twice in the first half, while McNary scored twice in the second, including Caitlyn’s late tying goal. Caitlyn is a senior who plans to attend college at an as yet undetermined school.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from South Salem boys soccer – David Garcia Campos. David, a freshman, plays forward for the 3-1 Saxons. David was the “Man of the Match” – recording a brace (two goals) and an assist – in the season opener: a 3-1 win over Sheldon. In the second minute of the match, the freshman phenom assisted junior striker Noah Diaz on the opening goal. In the 25th minute, David scored his first Saxon goal off a nice cross from junior Jafet Ruelas. Five minutes later, David finished off his brace with an assist from sophomore Julian Rivas. In Thursday’s win over a tough North Salem squad David scored the winning goal in a hard fought rivalry game.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McKay cross country – Kaydence Nguyen. Kaydence is a ninth grader. At the Wilsonville Night Meet, in her first official race as a Royal Scot, Kaydence placed eighth in the division race for ninth graders and broke the McKay cross country all-time 3,000 meter record for a 9th grader by 15 seconds with a time of 11:55. Her time lands her fourth on the all-time McKay record board at the 3,000 meter distance as well.
