SALEM, Ore.– First half goals by Kaden Young (ninth minute) and Tyce Chaney (26th minute) really helped West Salem Boys soccer relax a little in their 5-0 win over Sheldon Wednesday night.
With the Irish matching their intensity into the second half, it was a nice little cushion waiting for that decisive third goal. Knowing that one goal in this two-goal game could put them in an unfavorable position in the final 40 minutes of the game, Zechariah Hinds trusted his team to back him up as he did with three clutch saves in the opening half.
“I know they’ll listen to me. I know that we’re all connected and I know that we know what we’re doing,” said Hinds. “And it’s really easy for me to be confident in that because they’ve showed me time after time that I can be confident in them. I don’t know, this year we’ve came out with heart and it’s going good.”
It was 2-0 coming out of the halftime break and yes both teams had their chances the first ten minutes to push their lead to three to no avail with Sheldon having the equal opportunities to the same result.
The game was a test of patience for the Titans as they start 3-0 on the season through the frustrations of connecting on passes, slowing down the game and finishing opportunities in front of them.
With the game still standing at 2-0 entering the 60th minute, West Salem finally found the back of the net again when Yahir Bernal connected on one of his two goals in the game.
“It was important because we had that second goal but we were struggling, we wanted to secure the lead. After the third goal, it helped relax us and we could play our soccer and go on to score more goals,” said Bernal. “We just got to figure out our style first because right now we’re struggling in the back a little bit, but we just got to calm down and play our game.”
Bernal would pick up his ‘Brace’-feat with 6:40 left in the game during the 74th minute and Andres Labate adding the Titans fifth goal of the game.
West Salem will host Cleveland Friday night at 7pm before traveling to Barlow Tuesday for a 6:30pm kickoff.
