SHERIDAN, Ore.– Coming off their fourth-straight set win and their eighth of the summer, there was some fatigue in the legs of Amity having coming off a three-set sweep of Dayton the match before.
Sheridan, who was on the bubble last season for 2A playoffs, had jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the Warriors to start the second set of the three-set summer scrimmage Thursday night.
But slowly, the scrappiness of the Amity squad slowly tied the game up at 14 with the Warriors taking set 2 25-23 over the Spartans entering a third set that saw Amity score 13 of the sets first 14 points of the set.
The approach to rotations for the game and the challenges to come together with the outcome they want to achieve was something awesome to see said Head Coach Katelyn Rolston.
“They have to make their rotation, they draw a number so they’re put with whoever they’re put with and they have to make it work,” Rolston starts. “So their ability to pull it out together and get over the hump together, next to people or positions they really play with is really awesome to see them push through that struggle.”
With two freshman being tossed into the Varsity fire this week in Megan Scharf and Bridgette Berkey, they held their own with Amity built a 24-7 lead. But with Sheridan making a late match rally, the Spartans scoring 11 straight points to get back into reasonable striking distance of the Warriors at 24-18 before Amity shut the door to finish off the match.
“It shows them that they can do it. Yeah your in a tough position and it may take a couple of points to get over it, but if you got that flexibility don’t give up. The ball is not over until it’s over,” said Rolston.
“They did awesome, they totally stepped up. For being freshman coming out, both of those freshman were at our Tuesday game. So it’s totally thrown into ‘hello, here’s High School ball and here how it goes’ and I think they totally held their own,” adds Rolston on Scharf and Berkey.
Amity will be back at it Tuesday at home when they play Yamhill-Carlton at 5:30 and Perrydale at 7:30pm before traveling to Willamina next Thursday to play Dayton and the host Bulldogs at 6:30 and 7:30 respectively.
