SALEM, Ore.– The Salem Sports and Breakfast club honorees for May 10 include West Salem’s Lucy Jolivette, North Salem’s Maliyah Thompson, Sprague’s Will Deloretto and the Titans Brandon Eyre.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from West Salem Track and Field – Lucy Jolivette. Lucy is a senior for the Titans. Last week vs. Sprague Lucy recorded a personal best 12.33 in the 100 meters and ran the second leg of the 4×100 meters that finished first. At the elite Jesuit Twilight Relays, which featured over 70 teams, she placed fourth in the 100 meters running a personal record 12.04 – the second-best time currently in 6A. Lucy also anchored the second place 4×200 meters relay which bettered their own school record and the seventh place 4×400 meters relay, and helped the 4×100 meters team to a second place finish.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from North Salem Track and Field – Maliyah Thompson. Maliyah is a junior for the Vikings. Last season, as a sophomore, she won three medals at the OSAA State 6A meet, including a gold in the 4 x 100 meters relay. Maliyah was also chosen as the Statesman-Journal High School Track Athlete of the Year in 2018! In 2019 she is doing even better. At the prestigious Centennial Invitational, Maliyah competed in four events: the 4 x 100 meters relay, the 100 meters, the high hurdles, and the 200 meters. She not only won four medals, including gold in the relay, but ran the fastest times in 5A in all four events. North’s 4×100 relay team is Oregon’s fastest in all divisions.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from Sprague Baseball – Will Deloretto. Will, a senior, plays infield and pitches for the 8-4 Olys. A returning all-Greater Valley Conference player in 2018, Will has played most of this season at 3rd base. He also has three starts on the mound this year with a 2.10 earned run average, including a start against 5A #5 ranked Silverton where he earned the 5-1 win with 6 strikeouts against no walks. He’s also taking care of business at the plate – for the last three games going 6 for 9 with three singles, three doubles, two walks, and three runs batted in. On the season Will is hitting .448 and has a .668 slugging percentage.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from West Salem Boys Golf – Brandon Eyre. Brandon is a sophomore for the Titans. As a freshman Brandon won the Greater Valley Conference tournament and tied for 8th in the OSAA State championship for 2018. He continued his strong play in 2019, winning the fourteen team “Showcase” in Portland. A very consistent player, Brandon has won all four of West Salem’s league events. His scoring average for the 2019 season at 72, he won his second conference tournament – now the Mountain Valley Conference – held at McNary Golf Club, with a two-round score of 142
