SWEET HOME, Ore.–  The Santiam Boys 4×100 relay team found themselves in the fastest heat of the Meet of Champions Saturday, going up against some fast teams like 4A’s Sisters in the first Track event of the meet in Sweet Home.

Crap, by race’s end, they were the lone 2A team in the Top 5 as East Linn Christian and Kennedy finished 11th and 12 respectively as the Wolverines finished fifth in the race.  Facing talent like this with one more meet before the District Meet is a good learning experience for quiet possibly a State Meet run for the team.

“The competition was great for us.  We haven’t really been challenged like this before, it’s just good to have someone else a lot faster than us,” said Trevor Tinney, the anchor leg for the team.  “It pushes us and that our team can give it everything we got; it really pushes us.”

The Santiam Boys ran a 45.73, but it didn’t come without any adversity.  For two of the hand-offs, the Wolverines had to wing the handoffs in the zones without having their markers on the ground.

The tape in which they use for the handoffs were pulled off the track before the start of the race for the Wolverine Sprinters; and though Trevor Whitmire admits that they could still work on their handoffs entering the Regis Twilight on Friday.

“It was good to see that they knew when to go and know kind of the speed difference between each other and when to take off without marks,” said Whitmire., who was the first leg of the relay  “It was good, I don’t think anyone knew that marks were gone outside of themselves and they just kind of take a stand.  Take off when they knew when they have a feeling when they need to.”`

In other events at the Meet of Champions of note, Brody Davidson finished second in the 200 meter dash with a 23.61 PR and was sixth in the High Jump and Long Jump. Isaac Turner was sixth in the 1,500 meter run with a 4:30.10 PR performance.  David McCormick was ninth in the 110 meter hurdles.

Liliana Lyness was ninth in the shot put with a 35-feet-8-inch toss, the highest finishing Santiam Girls athlete in the meet. Jasmyn Clark threw 90-feet-11-inches and Kristin Crofoot jumped a 28-feet-3.5-inches in the Triple Jump, both were 13th in their respective events in the Meet of Champions.
