SALEM, Ore.–Here are the Salem Sports And Breakfast Club honorees for this week, February 22.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem girls basketball, is Gretchen Olsen. Gretchen, a junior and team captain, plays wing for the 12-1 Mounatin Valley Conference champion Saxons. In last Friday’s 58-41 win over Mountain View she had three 3-pointers on her way to a team high 15 points. The following day in the 51-47 win over Summit, Gretchen led the team with 20. Gretchen is a huge threat from beyond the arc, going 7 for 9 recently against McKay and averaging 44% from long-range for the season. Head Coach: Adrian Lewis.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from South Salem girls swimming, is Sophia Stavrianeas. Sophia is a sophomore for the Saxons. Sophia had nine individual wins during the season to help lead the Saxon girls to an undefeated dual meet season. She scored the most points for the girls team at the Mountain Valley Conference championship meet where the Saxon girls finished 3rd behind Bend and Summit. Sophia finished 4th in the 100 and 200 freestyle – qualifying her for State in both events, she also led of the 3rd place 200 and 400 freestyle relays who also qualified for State. At state Sophia earned 16th and 18th in the 100 and 200 free, while the relays finished 14th and 11th respectively. Coach: Eric Richey.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from North Salem girls swimming, is Morning Ped. Morning holds seven of eight North Salem records as a sophomore. Undefeated in duel meets this season, she was a member of the 200 Medley relay that qualified for State – the first relay qualification in many years for the Vikings. At State the 200 Medley relay finished in 11th place. Individually Morning medaled in the 100 breaststroke – finishing 3rd and the 2nd in 200 individual medley where she finished in second place. The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague boys swimming, is Davin Miehl. Davin is a sophomore for the Olys. In the State finals last weekend, he competed in four events. Individually he placed 17th in the 200 freestyle and 16th in the 500 freestyle. Davin was also a member of the 6th place 400 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay where he swam the freestyle leg. Coach: Caleb Fenner.

The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week, from Sprague boys swimming, is Alex Feng. Alex is a senior for the Olys who will attend Oregon State University next year and study mechanical engineering and computer science. In the State finals last weekend, he competed in four events. Individually he placed 17th in the 100 backstroke and 15th in the 50 freestyle. Alex was also a member of the 6th place 400 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay where he swam the butterfly leg. The Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Senior Athlete of the Year for Boys Swimming is Ian Shultz. Ian is a senior for the Olys who will be attending the University of Denver next year. He will study Finance and swim for UD. At last week’s conference meet Ian came in first in both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke – breaking his own Sprague records with the times. Ian finished 1st at districts in the 100 breast all four of his years in high school. At State he was also a member of the 6th place 400 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay, swimming the backstroke in the medley. Individually Ian earned a 4th place in the 50 free and 2nd in the 100 breast. Coach: Caleb Fenner.
