SALEM, Ore.–Here are this weeks Salem Sports and Breakfast Club honorees for this week, February 15:
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from Sprague Girls Swimming: Alexis Smith. Alexis is a junior for the Olys. At districts as a 9th grader Alexis won the 100 and 200 freestyle and went on to OSAA state meet to finish fifth in the 100 freestyle. As a sophomore she finished first at districts in the 100 and second in the 50 freestyle before finishing fifth and sixth in the events at State. In this year’s districts she had the fastest meet times for the 50 and 100 free style, againg qualifying to swim both events this weekend at State. Head Coach: Caleb Fenner
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from West Salem Girls Basketball: Maddie Bertsch.Maddie, a senior guard, is a second-year captain for the 8-3 Titans. She is averaging 16.5 points per game, 4.5 boards, and 3.5 assists –averages that include a career high 37-point game this season. Maddie was named first-team all-Greater Valley Conference as a junior. She plans to attend Oregon State University next year, studying Business. Head Coach: Katie Singleton.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from Sprague Boys Swimming: Ian Shultz. Ian is a senior for the Olys who plans to attend the University of Denver where he will swim and pursue a degree in Finance. At last week’s districts Ian came in first in both 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke – breaking his own Sprague records with the times.
Ian finished first at districts in the 100 breaststroke all four years of his high school career, finishing third at State as a junior. He is the top seed going into the OSAA state meet. He has a busy weekend at State where he is also seeded fourth in the 50 freestyle and is a member of both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Head Coach: Caleb Fenner.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from South Salem Boys Basketball: Treyden Harris. Treyden, a senior, plays guard for the 9-1 Saxons. In last week’s 89-86 win over Sprague he scored 29 points and had seven boards. In the 67-63 win over Mountain View he had 21 points, seven boards, and 3 assists. For the season Treyden is averaging 14.1 points, 4.8 boards, and 1.2 assists. A true threat from beyond the arc, Treyden’s game is evolving to include more aggressively attacking the rim, scoring inside as well. Head Coach: Tyler Allen.
