SALEM, Ore.– Here are the Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Athlete’s of the Week for February 1st. Special thanks to Bryan Sutherland for relaying the information over!
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McNary girls basketball: Leah Doutt. Leah, a sophomore, plays guard for the 6-1 Celts. Leah was key in the 42-39 win over West last month. Last night, versus South, in the season’s lone league loss, she led all scorers with 21 points. Leah is averaging 13 points and five boards a game.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from South Salem girls basketball – Hilary James. Hilary, a sophomore, plays guard for the 6-1 Saxons. In the 43-35 win over Bend she had 14 points, six boards, five assists, and four steals. In the win over McKay she had 15 points, five boards, seven assists, and four steals. Against West, in the season’s lone loss, Leah scored 23 while grabbing four boards and dishing out four assists. And in Thursdays showdown between the top two teams in the Mountain Valley Conference she scored 15 points against McNary.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week from South Salem wrestling – Julian Ortiz. Julian, a junior captain and three-year letter winner for the Saxons, qualified for the state tournament a year ago and is 22-4 on the year and a top seed in the Mountain Valley Conference at 285 pounds. Last week he clinched the Saxon’s first dual meet win over McNary in over a decade with a fall.
Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week from McKay wrestling – Bryant Mendoza. Bryant, a junior, wrestles at 126 for the Scots and is currently ranked seventh in the state. He finished 4th in the conference meet last year as a sophomore. This season he has earned a secnd place finish at the Cottage Grove tournament and won the Herrin Holiday Classic hosted at McKay.
