Salem Sports And Breakfast Club Athlete’s Of The Week

SALEM, Ore.–  Here are the week of December 7th’s Athlete’s of the Week by the Salem Sports Breakfast Club.  Special thanks to Bryan Sutherland for relaying this over!

The Athlete’s of the Week include Abbi Hawley (McNary), Dana Romero (North Salem), David Rubio (McKay) and Jaden Nielsen-Skinner (South Salem).  Here is the Press Release:

Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from McNary Girls Basketball – Abbie Hawley. Abbie, a senior, plays guard for the Celts. Abbie is a regular honoree for SSBC this season, earning both an Athlete of the Week award and our Senior Athlete of the Year for girls soccer. The basketball season is young, but Abbie already showed herself with a 25 point and 5 board game against a tough Roosevelt team.

Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from North Salem Girls Basketball – Dana Romero. Dana, a senior, is a team captain and plays point guard for the Vikings. In the 72-12 drubbing of Gresham, Dana came out strong, scoring the team’s first 10 points and finishing with 38 – which may be the most points scored by an athlete for NSHS girls’ basketball.
In the 50-34 win over McKay, Dana scored 28 while going 13-of-15 from the line. North also pulled off a 45-44 win over Putnam this week and is currently 3-0 and ranked 3rd in 5A. Dana earned AOW honors last season as well.

Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week is from South Salem Boys Basketball – Jaden Nielsen-Skinner. “Skinny” is a senior and plays point guard for the Saxons. In the season opening 82-73 win over South Eugene, Jaden rattled off 37 points while dishing out 8 assists and collecting 5 rebounds.
Jaden is a three-time SSBC AOW, also earning the honors as a sophomore and a junior and was named 1st team all-GVC as a junior. Jaden has committed to play basketball next year for Portland State University.

Our Salem Sports and Breakfast Club Les Schwab Athlete of the Week from McKay Wrestling is David Rubio. David, a senior, wrestles at 170 and 180 for the Scots. He is the reigning 6A state champion in the 170 class. This season he won the Perry-Burlison tournament where he earned outstanding wrestler honors as well.
He won by pin, tech-fall, and major decision prior to the championship match where he beat a returning state runner-up who had beaten him last year in the finals at the same tournament. David earned SSBC AOW honors twice last season as well.
