Roughriders Pulls Away From McNary

KEIZER, Ore.–  Lessons can be taken away from the first game of the year, especially when you have seven sophomores on the squad like McNary has this season.

The Lady Celtics jumped out and built a 42-34 lead on a Roosevelt squad that made the trip down from Portland for the battle of the first win of the season.

Abbie Hawley and the Roughriders Ahliah Nordstrom both had 17 first half points as both led the charge for both of their respective squads Thursday night in Keizer.

But in the second half, it seemed as if the youth that they have showed a little as Roosevelt slowly came back into the game and had led 58-52 before Hawley went 3-for-4 from the stripe to get McNary back to within three with 5:26 left in the contest.

“I think everyone got a wake up call and we don’t have a ton of experience, but I think now people understand what the expectations are,” said Hawley, who scored 25 points.  “So we need to come out to practice and we’re going to have to put the work in for next Friday.”

The Roughriders would take advantage of some untimely turnovers by the Celts to push their lead to 10 at 65-55 over the course of the next three minutes to seal the 69-57 win to start the season.

But with roughly a week to work out the kinks and get relaxed and comfortable again with what they’re trying to do before they host Westview next Friday at 7:15pm

“That will help but we really have to get focused and just go 110-percent effort in,” said Hawley.
