SALEM, Ore.– Blanchet Catholic finished fifth in the State of Oregon Saturday in 3A, losing to a tough South Umpqua team in straight sets 17-25, 18-25, 20-25. But getting there was something awesome.
They started the State Tournament at Forest Grove High School by defeating rival Salem Academy in straight sets as the Lady Crusaders eventually finished fourth-place Saturday afternoon. The Lady Cavaliers overcame losing Shelby Halfman to appendicitis two hours before their five-set battle with #1 and State Runner-Up Cascade Christian leading up to the Third/Fifth place match after their tough loss to the Lady Challengers.
By Tournament’s end though, Blanchet brought home as well the Sportsmanship Award, a first in program history. Halfman was named to the First team, Kayla Neidigh, Ally Jones and Kaela Salang were named to the Second Team were named to the All-State Team.
Head Coach Sherrie Bashaw was proud with how much this team did to overcome the adversity of losing a teammate as they went to work trying to fulfill their goals and expectations that they set forth for themselves.
“So very proud of these amazing young ladies, and despite not finishing in the place they wanted, they were resilient through all the adversity, played together as a true team, never ever gave up and came home with more hardware than ever before. Love these girls!,” said Bashaw.
