SALEM, Ore.–  It was a good test for the young Gervais Cougar Volleyball team Saturday at the Salem Academy Crusader Tournament in Salem.

Having faced Westside Christian, the height of former PacWest Conference opponent Salem Academy and splitting with Columbia Christian to close out pool play before entering their bracket play versus Oregon Episcopal School in the Silver Bracket, the experience for the squad Saturday served as a positive entering the next few games of the season.

“I think today helped us get better at moving our feet and just working and moving together as a team,” said Mary Davidson. “Coach tells us it’s like moving like the ocean kind of and I think that’s just going to help us improving in our games moving forward.

“It helps us and challenges us espically with teams like Salem Academy who are taller and have harder and stronger hits.  Them and Gaston, they had very hard hitters too.”

Against the sixth-ranked Aardvarks, OES took the first set 25-14 before the Lady Cats were adjusting to Gaston as they made a late run against the Aardvarks in bringing the game to within four before a hitting error ended the match Saturday with OES eventually taking the Silver Bracket.

“It helps us a lot as a team to get our confidence up a little bit.  I think we really played hard and it was really fun to be out there playing,” said Davidson on the late rally as they wrap up the day.  “Just working on getting it to the front row and just better passes as a team.  Definitely moving our feet, staying on our toes and always just hustling every play.”

With them traveling to Colton Tuesday and then host Delphian Thursday to wrap up the first half of league this week with them traveling to face the Dragons, Gervais will be looking to build off of Saturday’s performance entering the tail-end of the first half of league.
