SALEM, Ore.- McKay’s own tournament saw an increase of teams from 2017’s edition to 2018’s from nine teams to 12 with each team separated into three separate pools to determine who will play in the Gold, Sliver and Bronze brackets Saturday afternoon.
“It’s great, the people in our State are now starting to recognize that we put something on good. We have good facilities , a good system. So they’re starting to recognize that this is a great place to come and that gives us some pride in that,” said Scots Head Coach Scott Coons.
In attendance were playoff teams like Aloha, Glencoe (2017 sixth-place team) and South Eugene from 6A. 5A’s Dallas that reached the Elite 8, 3A’s Blanchet Catholic that too reached the Elite 8 Final Site in their respective classification. Madison (finished 7-13 in 2017), Stayton, North Salem , Jefferson of Portland, Beaverton and Parkrose were too there as Pool Play got underway.
The Lady Scots went 3-0 in pool play with two-set sweeps of Aloha, Madison and Parkrose to get into the Gold Bracket where they drew Blanchet Catholic.
Both teams split the first two sets with identical 25-12 set wins, but the Cavaliers would ultimately take the bracket-game opener 25-12, 12-25, 16-14 as South Eugene took home the Gold Bracket Title.
“Today was a great test. We did fantastic in the morning, we won all three games against tough teams,” starts Coons on his McKay team. “We ran out of gas, so we need to get in and work our conditionin and making some fine tune adjustments on what we’re doing on our defense and we’re going to be ready to go against West (Salem) on Tuesday.”
The Scots (0-3) will travel across the bridge to play the Lady Titans (0-3) Tuesday at 6:30pm as both teams look for their first wins of the season.
