EUGENE, Ore– The first inning was an interesting one for the Post 20 Dirtbags at Sheldon High School for their second game of the Papa’s Tournament.
The bats were producing runs with three in the top half of the inning, but starting pitcher Braden Allision had a tough first inning before settling in during the next three innings of Thursday’s game.
“The first inning I wasn’t hitting my spot really well with my fastball, I was leaving a lot of pitches right in the middle and they were getting good barrel on it,” said Allision on the first inning. “I settled down in the next couple of innings and I pounded my spots a little better.”
Over the next four innings, Post 20 scored at least one run in each inning.
Four in the second to make it 7-2. Peter Mendazona hit a a RBI double to bring Blake Arritola home as the lone run in the third. Derek Maiben blasted a two-run home run that was followed by Eric Kessler’s RBI single in the fourth before scoring one more run in the fifth with their defense holding Grants Pass to those two runs in the first.
“We just wanted to see how far we can take her,” said Maiben who had two doubles to go with his Home Run in the fourth inning. “I think we need to stay ready because there’s going to be more team’s that we’re going to face tomorrow and we need to be even more ready than we were today.”
Noah Amador came in during the fifth and pitched a quick three-up, three-down inning to close out the 12-2 win in five innings with them playing at Swede Johnson at North Eugene High School Friday afternoon at 2pm.
