STAYTON, Ore.– Certianly there’s still things to improve upon, but Tuesday’s 7-2 win over the defending 4A State Champions in Newport did send a message unbeknownst to those outside of Stayton:
The capabilities of what the Eagles Boys Soccer Team can do if they stick to their guns. Head Coach Chris Shields told his team after the win in which Kevin Hernandez (twice), Javier Navarro and Alex Cramer helped put Stayton up 4-1 entering the halftime break, that they showed qualities of the number-one team in State with how they played.
Jose ‘Chivo’ Gomez started the second half scoring with a 18-yarder to make it 5-1, not nearly as exciting as near mid-field goal he did a few games back but Stayton would score two more goals to ice the win before Newport netted one more with a minute left in the ball game.
“The difference between how we played tonight and how we’ve been playing previous games is the fact we didn’t let easy goals go away,” said Cramer, who had a ‘brace’-feat in the game along with Hernandez. “We finished what we had and that was the game-maker right there was that we finished our chances and we got them behind early and then we played like the team we can play and we put pressure on them and they didn’t come out of it.”
Shields reminds them though, that yeah they played well against Newport to close out the first loop of play; the Eagles have Philomath again Thursday as they have to play each Oregon West Conference-team again.
And though they started league 5-0 and sitting a game on the Cubs and three ahead of the third-place Warriors, they could as easily finish 0-5 in the back-end of the schedule and could be on the negative side of the playoff equation instead of the positive side if they don’t play their game.
“This is what we can do, we just have to do it,” said Shields on his team entering the second-half of league. “We need everyone to play well and sometimes we haven’t got full potential games from everybody and we need everybody to show up.
“Kevin finishes a couple of chances, we needed those. Javier gets his goal, Alex gets his goal…we missed a lot of goals. We dominate teams and miss goals. Even tonight we’ve had chances even more chances, I’d like to see us, it’s not so much a confidence booster it’s just, this is what we should look like. It’s easy. Like if we do the easy things, it’s easy.
